Aigua Dolç Cove

A small cove in the heart of nature that will surprise you.”

Aigua Dolç Cove, Denia panoramic view

If you’re looking for a unique experience on the Costa Blanca, Aigua Dolç Cove in Dénia is a hidden gem you simply can’t miss. Its natural beauty and crystal-clear waters will make you feel like you’re in a paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean. Although access is challenging, its deep waters, cliffs, and the mix of fresh and salt water make it a special place for diving and observing marine life. Not to mention, it is the only naturist beach in Dénia.

Description

Cala del Aigua Dolç is a small rocky cove located at the end of Las Rotas, in Dénia. What makes it so special is its location within the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve, surrounded by tall cliffs that offer a unique landscape and a peaceful, natural atmosphere.

Upon arrival, you will find an area dominated by stones and a small zone of rounded pebbles. Although it is not a comfortable beach for sunbathing, since there is hardly any space to lay a towel, the natural surroundings make up for any inconvenience. It is recommended to wear water shoes or suitable footwear, as entering the water requires crossing some rocks. Once in the water, the depth increases quickly, making it an ideal spot for diving and exploring marine life.

One of the most striking features of this cove is that in some areas, freshwater from the Montgó Natural Park mixes with the seawater. This phenomenon creates an underwater halo effect known as a halocline, which also affects the temperature, making it colder in those areas.

Although it is a nudist cove, the coexistence between naturists and those who prefer to swim with clothing is completely respectful. However, it is recommended not to take photos that include naked bathers to respect their privacy. Cala del Aigua Dolç is a place where nature surrounds you at every corner, perfect for those looking for a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.

Activities

Although small, Cala del Aigua Dolç offers several activities for nature and sea lovers:

  • Diving: Its depth and rich marine life make it ideal for snorkeling and diving. Due to the mix of fresh and saltwater, swimming here is a unique experience. Diving is limited and requires prior permission from the Territorial Directorate of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food, and Water of Alicante (Tel. 012 / 963 866 000).
  • Hiking: Being close to the Montgó Natural Park, it is an excellent spot for hiking in the surrounding area and enjoying the views.
  • Naturism: This is the only area in Dénia where it is allowed.
  • Photography: Ideal for capturing photos of Cabo de San Antonio and its cliffs.
  • Nearby restaurants: The cove is in a residential area with few shops, but there are two nearby restaurants: Restaurante Mena and Restaurante Ca Nano.
  • Nearby excursions: Two interesting excursions can be done in this area:
  • La Cova Tallada: a sea cave located in the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve, between Dénia and Xábia. It combines natural and artificial parts, as it was used to extract tosca stone. Inside, there are freshwater pools and historical remnants such as 11th-century lamps and an inscription from King Philip III. Access is regulated on specific dates, requiring prior reservation. Outside these dates, entry is free.
  • La Torre del Gerro: a 16th-century watchtower in Dénia, built as part of a defensive system against Berber pirates. Cone-shaped and 13.5 meters tall, it features defensive elements such as machicolations and a shield of Charles V. It was part of a network of towers that communicated via fire or mirror signals. Access is on foot, although it is possible to approach by vehicle to about 300 meters via Calle Vía Lactea.

More Information

It is important to remember that, being located within a marine reserve, environmental conservation is essential. Visitors are encouraged to respect the protection rules and avoid touching marine life. During certain times of the year, whales can be spotted in the reserve, making the experience even more magical.

The mix of freshwater coming from the Montgó Natural Park is one of the most interesting phenomena in this cove. This mix creates an underwater mist called a halocline, which also makes the water colder in certain areas.
