Biblioplaya (Beach Library) in Denia: The Pleasure of Reading by the Sea

Biblioplaya en el paseo de la Marineta Cassiana en Denia Alicante

Picture this: you’re lying on the sand, feeling the sea breeze, listening to the gentle sound of the waves… and in your hands, a good book. This isn’t a literary fantasy — it’s exactly what the beach library service in Denia offers. I discovered this little gem a couple of summers ago, and since then, it has become a must-stop every time I visit the Alicante coast.

This service, which combines the pleasure of reading with the relaxation only a Mediterranean beach can provide, has been one of the most successful initiatives by Denia Town Council to promote cultural tourism and wellbeing during the summer. Haven’t heard of it yet? Let me tell you all about it.

What is a beach library and how does it work in Denia?

The beach library is an initiative launched by the Denia Municipal Library in 2021. In essence, it’s a free book and newspaper lending service right on the beach — something simple that completely transforms your summer experience.

You can borrow a book for up to 15 days and read it wherever you like: on the sand, at your accommodation, on a sunbed, or under your parasol. There’s also a reading area with tables and chairs where you can read the daily papers free of charge. Personally, I found this fantastic — every morning I could read the newspaper calmly, with the sound of the sea in the background, and truly switch off from the world.

No need to register online, pay, or bring anything special. All you need is a desire to read and to follow a few basic rules (we’ll get to those below). A concept that’s as simple as it is brilliant.

Where to find the beach libraries in Denia

Denia currently has two beach libraries, each in a different setting:

  • La Marineta Cassiana Beach: located along the pedestrian promenade, it’s perfect for those seeking a more peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. This is where I first discovered the service — I was impressed by how well organised and tidy it was.
  • Les Albaranes Beach: set right on the sand, it’s ideal if you prefer to read without straying a single step from the sea. It’s comfortable, spacious, and popular among those who’ve known about the service for years.

Both beach libraries are clearly signposted and easy to find. The staff are friendly, offer advice on the available options, and even suggest reading ideas if you’re not sure where to start.

What the beach library offers: much more than books

Although the free book lending is what first catches your eye, Denia’s beach library offers much more:

  • Daily newspapers available to read on site.
  • Tables and chairs for comfortable reading.
  • A varied catalogue including novels, essays, children’s and young adult literature, travel guides, and titles in several languages.
  • A relaxed and safe atmosphere where you can spend hours enjoying your reading time.

An interesting detail is that the service isn’t just for adults. There’s also a children’s area with stories, picture books, and entertainment options — perfect if you’re visiting with little ones.

Opening hours and season dates: enjoy the service all summer long

The beach library service operates during the high summer season, specifically:

🗓 From 17 June to 30 September
🕘 Opening hours:

  • Morning: from 9:00 to 14:00
  • Afternoon: from 17:00 to 20:00
  • Open from Tuesday to Saturday.

Personally, I loved going early in the morning, when the beach was still quiet and the sun not too strong. It was the perfect moment to switch off and enjoy the calm, reading without any rush.

Rules and tips for making the most of the beach library

As with any public service, the beach library has a few basic rules to help keep things organised and ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Here are some that I found particularly important (and useful):

  • Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult — there is no childcare staff.
  • Each user may borrow only one book for a maximum period of 15 days.
  • Daily newspapers cannot be borrowed; they are for on-site reading only.
  • The maximum reading time for newspapers is 30 minutes, so that more people can enjoy them.
  • Entering wet, barefoot or covered in sand is not allowed.
  • Please respect the hygiene rules and capacity limits, which may vary depending on the health situation.

Following these simple rules isn’t just about good manners — it genuinely improves the experience for everyone. During my visits, I never had any issues and always found the area clean and well looked after.

Advantages of the beach libraries in Denia compared to other summer activities

Compared to other summer services, the beach library stands out for:

  • Being 100% free and managed by the City Council itself.
  • Having a wide opening schedule.
  • Offering varied content for all ages.
  • Providing a calm, unique space that is highly appreciated by returning visitors.
  • Being an ideal alternative during the hottest hours, when staying under the sun is less appealing.

In addition, it’s an excellent option for those who want to take a break from phones or screens, at least for a while each day. Speaking from experience, swapping endless scrolling for a few well-written pages feels magical.

A commitment to reading, tranquillity and respect for the surroundings

What I loved most about the beach library service is that it promotes values such as respect, shared silence and a love of books. It’s a great example of how small initiatives can have a big impact on tourism quality.

The way the municipal library has extended its activity to the coast is truly commendable. Seeing families, older adults and young people sharing the same space with a book in hand is simply inspiring.
