Denia is much more than a charming Mediterranean coastal town. It’s a true paradise for those who enjoy water sports, especially kitesurfing and wingfoiling.
With kilometres of coastline, a wide variety of beaches, and a privileged climate, Denia has become one of the favourite destinations for riders from across Spain and Europe. Both national and regional competitions are held here, and the spots offer very diverse conditions, meaning there’s always a perfect place for you depending on your level and the wind of the day.
Another key factor is that Denia enjoys many windy days throughout the year. Thanks to its geographical orientation, it receives thermal winds, terral winds, levante winds, and other gems well known to kite enthusiasts. Of course, depending on the season and prevailing wind, it’s important to choose the right beach for your session. And that’s exactly what we’ll explore next.

North Breakwater Marina El Portet: the most convenient spot for year-round kiting

If you’re looking for a place to kite year-round, hassle-free, with direct access and fairly predictable conditions, El Portet in the northern part of Denia’s harbour is the spot for you.
This spot isn’t officially classified as a beach, as it belongs to the Denia harbour, but it’s very popular among local kiters. Its main advantage is that it usually has little wave activity, making it ideal for practising freestyle or perfecting manoeuvres without the hassle of large waves.
At the north breakwater, the main winds are Garbí, Gregal, and Levante, and the best part is you can kite here even in summer. However, having a federation licence or civil liability insurance is mandatory, as this is a regulated area.
“The main location, both for proximity and convenience, is at the north breakwater of the harbour, in Marina El Portet. This place isn’t classified as a beach and depends on the Denia harbour. It’s a very popular destination for freestyle as it usually has little wave activity.”

Les Deveses: ideal for enjoying kitesurfing without crowds

Les Deveses is one of the most beloved spots among the kitesurfing community in the Valencian Community. This long, wide beach provides the perfect setting to set up your gear calmly, launch your kite, and get into the water without crowds.
Unlike other coves or urban beaches in Denia, Les Deveses offers space and tranquility, something especially appreciated during summer. Additionally, the thermal winds here are particularly reliable for much of the year, especially in spring and summer.
The prevailing winds are Llebeig (SW) and Garbí (SSW). They usually start around midday or in the afternoon, with stable intensities between 12 and 20 knots, making it perfect both for learning and for improving your skills.
“Les Deveses is a long and relatively wide beach, especially compared to other coves or more urban beaches. This provides enough safe space to set up gear, launch and land kites, and kite without the crowds of bathers found in more central beaches of Denia.”

Their instructors are qualified and certified by the FEV (Spanish Sailing Federation) and the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation). They also have a sports club for enthusiasts.

Els Molins: the winter gem for experienced riders

If you’re someone who doesn’t hang up the kite in winter, Els Molins is your place. This beach stands out as the only one in the Valencian Community facing north, allowing it to receive winds blocked at other spots by the surrounding terrain.
During the colder months, kiting here is done with W, NW, and NE winds, with gusts that can reach 40 knots during storms. This is a challenging area, more suitable for experienced riders, but extremely rewarding if you know what you’re doing.
However, there is an important restriction: kiting here is prohibited in summer (1 July to 31 August) due to the high number of bathers. Outside these dates, in spring and autumn, it’s an excellent spot.
“A perfect place to kite in winter with terral winds. It’s the only beach in the Valencian Community facing north, which makes it ideal for W and NW winds… making this spot one of the best for the winter season.”

Practical tips before hitting the water
- Check wind conditions in real time. Apps like Windguru or Windy are essential.
- Never kite alone, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the spot.
- Inspect your gear before every session: lines, kite, harness… safety comes first.
- Avoid crowded areas, particularly in summer.
- Respect swimming zones, they are clearly marked and will help you avoid fines.
Regulations, licences, and safety: what you need to know
We recommend staying well informed and consulting the municipal ordinance on beaches from the Denia Town Hall.
In many areas it’s mandatory to have a federation licence or civil liability insurance. This is not just to comply with regulations, but in case of an accident, it can save you from serious trouble.
There are also periods when kitesurfing is prohibited on certain beaches, especially in July and August. Check beforehand to avoid surprises.
And as always, respect bathers, keep a safe distance, and if you’re a beginner, kite with a companion or in designated areas.
