Dénia Bus Station: Complete Guide and Updated Details

estación de autobuses de Denia, nueva estación provisional de autobuses de Denia.

In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Dénia bus station, from its location and current conditions to routes, companies, prices, and connections both regional and national or international. I’ll also share my personal experience using this terminal, which, while functional, still has plenty of room for improvement. If you’re planning to travel to or from Dénia, this article will be very useful.

Where is Dénia Bus Station and How to Get There?

The current Dénia bus station, popularly known as the “new station”, is located on Calle Mestre José Monjo Ferrer, s/n, next to the Palacio de Justicia and very close to Parque de Torrecremada. Despite being called “new”, this station has been operating since May 2018. Its location is relatively central: you can reach it on foot from the city centre in just 10 minutes, making it a reasonably convenient access point for both residents and tourists.

I’ve personally made this walk many times, and while it’s not uncomfortable, what often confuses many is the history of location changes in the city. The old station was in Plaza Archiduque Carlos I, a much more central and busy area. For years, that was the main point of reference for catching a bus in Dénia. But after the opening of the temporary station, that area was redeveloped and no longer serves transport purposes, which today causes confusion for those unaware of the changes.

For visitors arriving from outside the city, it’s important to know that the station is not clearly signposted, and if you don’t have the location on your GPS, you might get lost among the nearby residential streets. Access is possible on foot, by private car (although parking is limited), or via the MarinaSalud city bus line, which has stops nearby on Avd. Alicante.

A Temporary Station for Over Five Years: Temporary or Permanent?

This station was created as a temporary solution, and this has been one of the main criticisms since its opening. It was inaugurated in May 2018 as an interim step until a modern, permanent station could be built. Yet here we are, over five years later, and everything remains the same.

From the outside, the station looks more like a makeshift building than a stable public infrastructure. It is built from stacked metal containers that serve as ticket offices. Inside, there is only a small window where tickets are sold, with no other services.

I have personally experienced the consequences of this precarious setup: “the station turns into an oven in summer and a cold, neglected place in winter”, with benches exposed to the sun and hardly any real shade to protect travellers. Although a metal pergola was installed in November 2018, most people still have to find shelter however they can, sitting on their luggage or standing beside the bays.

Furthermore, it is common to see people handling their luggage in unsafe conditions, because the design does not facilitate smooth movement for passengers with bags. The lack of public toilets, a closed waiting area, and clearly signposted offices makes using this terminal a frustrating experience. The harshest criticism I have read, which I completely agree with, describes it as a “shameful infrastructure” and a “historic disaster” for a tourist city like Dénia.

Bus Companies Operating at Dénia Station

Dénia bus station functions as a key transport hub both locally and nationally. Three main companies operate here:

ALSA

This is the most well-known and extensive company. It manages national and international routes. From here, you can travel to cities such as Alicante, Valencia, Gandia, Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Almería, as well as Lisbon, Geneva, Toulouse and Zurich.

Autocares Carrio

This company operates regional routes, connecting Dénia with nearby towns such as Xábia, Xaló, Ondara, Benimeli and Parcent. They also provide connections to La Marina Hospital and the Portal de la Marina shopping centre in Ondara. Very useful for residents of Marina Alta or those planning short trips.

Autocares Esteve

They also operate in the interior of Marina Alta, with routes to La Xara, Pedreguer and Benidoleig. Esteve is highly valued for connecting strategic points such as the Comarcal Hospital.

The good news is that bus frequency is reasonable, especially during the high season.

Popular Destinations from Dénia: National and International

One of the main strengths of Dénia bus station is the variety of destinations it offers, with regional, national, and even international connections that allow you to travel comfortably without your own vehicle.

Key National Destinations:

  • Alicante: from €14.16, between 1h 30min and 2h depending on stops.
  • Valencia: from €12.30, between 1h 30min and 2h depending on stops.
  • Gandia: from €3.95, this destination is important because it connects with Gandia train station. Approximately 1h.
  • Madrid: tickets from €49.57, although duration depends on the schedule, between 6h and 10h.
  • Barcelona: from €47.48, journey takes between 7h and 8h.
  • Murcia: from €21.62, between 3h and 4h depending on the schedule.

There are also connections to Benidorm, Castellón de la Plana, Albacete, Almería and Granada.

International Routes:

  • Lisbon: from €72.30, duration around 16h
  • You can also travel to Geneva, Toulouse and Zurich.

These routes allow both residents and tourists to have access to very comprehensive mobility.

Urban Public Transport: Connections with City Buses and Taxis

If you want to move around Dénia from or to the station, the Denibus urban bus system is your ally. The closest stops are on Avenida de Alicante, at numbers 14 and 19, depending on the direction you are travelling.

The price of a single ticket is €1.50, although the most convenient option is the 10-trip bus card which costs €12. That comes to €1.20 per journey, and if you use it frequently, it saves you quite a bit.

This system is especially useful for reaching key points such as the Comarcal Hospital, Les Marines, Les Rotes, or the Port of Dénia. However, not all lines run as frequently as one would like, especially during the low season.

Regarding taxis, there is a taxi rank near the station, but you can check this article where you will find phone numbers and the locations of other taxi ranks in Dénia.

Criticism of Dénia Bus Station: What No One Tells You

I cannot talk about this station without sharing the reality I have experienced many times. As mentioned before, the station feels like a space left to its own devices. Here are some concrete examples:

  • In summer, the benches are completely exposed to the sun. I have seen people sitting on their suitcases or trying to find shade where there is none.
  • In winter, the feeling of neglect and cold is severe. The small pergola that was installed does not solve the problem.
  • There are no public toilets, nor a waiting room to shelter in. The ticket office barely copes and does not function as a full office.
  • The absence of loudspeakers forces users to be constantly alert so as not to miss the bus. You cannot walk away or go to the bathroom (even if there was one) for fear of the bus leaving without you.

All this is even more serious when you consider that Dénia is a well-established tourist destination. For many travellers, the station is their first impression of the city, and believe me, it’s not a good one.

What Future Awaits Dénia Bus Station?

Unfortunately, there are no clear signs that a permanent station will be built in the short term. The project has been announced several times, yet it still has not materialised. Meanwhile, provisionality has become the norm, and citizens are beginning to lose hope.

The situation not only affects the city’s image, but also directly impacts students, the elderly, tourists, and residents who rely on the bus as their main mode of transport. Every year that passes without improvements is another year of accumulated frustration.

Personally, I believe Dénia deserves a station that reflects its importance. A functional, modern, comfortable, and safe infrastructure. Until then, we will continue to wait, literally under the sun or in the cold, at a provisional station that already feels permanent.
