The Dénia Castle Tunnel: A journey you shouldn’t miss

Tunel del castillo de Denia interior

When we think of Dénia, the first thing that usually comes to mind is its castle perched on the hill, the sea views and its vibrant port life. But right beneath that castle lies one of the city’s best-kept secrets: the castle tunnel. In this article, we’ll share some fascinating facts about this underground passage and how it went from being a wartime refuge to a practical access route that connects the northern and southern parts of Dénia.

A shelter with history

The tunnel was built between 1937 and 1938, right in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, with a very specific purpose: to serve as an air-raid shelter for the civilian population. Bombings were a constant threat to Republican cities such as Dénia, and this underground structure became a real lifesaver. It was excavated into the hill where the castle and old town stand, linking the south and north of the city directly beneath its most iconic monument.

Walking through the tunnel today, knowing it once witnessed the fear, resilience and hope of so many people, is quite moving. The walls, although restored, retain a certain austerity that reminds us why it was built and what its true purpose was.

From lifesaver to everyday passage

Over time, this tunnel stopped being just a symbol of survival and became a valuable urban feature. In my personal experience, I’ve used it countless times to walk from the Plaça del Consell in the heart of the old town to the Ronda de les Muralles on the northern side of the city. It’s a shortcut that saves you from having to go around or climb the castle hill. Especially handy in high season, as the northern area tends to be less crowded, offers free parking and connects quickly with the area near Calle Marqués de Campo.

Thanks to this connection, you can move easily between the historic centre —where the Town Hall and main squares are located— and the Baix la Mar district and the port in just a few minutes. It’s particularly convenient if you’re walking and prefer to avoid slopes or long detours.

The southern entrance to the tunnel is located at Plaça del Consell, an area of great historical value, full of cultural life and important administrative buildings. From there, after a short underground walk, you emerge directly onto Ronda de les Muralles. This evocatively named street runs along the old castle fortifications and offers views and access towards the city’s seafaring quarter.

From the northern exit, you can quickly reach Baix la Mar, one of Dénia’s most characterful neighbourhoods, where its fishing heritage is still palpable in the narrow streets, low façades and traditional restaurants that line them.

Renovation for the 21st century

In 2011, the tunnel underwent a major refurbishment. The lighting, access points, safety features and the surrounding urban area were all improved. This modernisation allowed the tunnel to become part of the daily life of both locals and visitors, without losing its heritage value.

Since then, walking through it has become more comfortable and safer. The experience remains simple and almost silent, and one can easily imagine the echoes of the past with every step. What was once an improvised shelter is now part of Dénia’s urban heart.

In December 2022, another step was taken to enhance its historical value: information panels were installed explaining the tunnel’s history as an air-raid shelter. This initiative gives the route a museum-like feel, allowing any visitor —without the need for a guide— to learn about the context in which it was built.

These signs provide historical facts and anecdotes that enrich the walk. Personally, I think it’s a brilliant idea. Turning a functional route into a living history lesson makes the city breathe culture in every corner.

How to visit the Dénia Castle Tunnel

The tunnel is completely free to enter and open to the public during the following hours:

  • Opening hours: 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Both entrances are clearly signposted and easy to access. The route is suitable for all ages and accessible for people with reduced mobility. As it is an underground passage, the floor may be slightly damp in places.

It’s also a great spot for unique photos: the soft lighting, the bright exits at each end and the tunnel’s distinctive atmosphere make it a very Instagrammable place.
